Outdoor Adventure Skills

Outdoor Adventure Skills (OAS) is the technical progression framework in Scouts Australia. Tussock tracks the full 9-stage matrix across all streams, with granular requirement checkboxes and automatic cross-stream mapping.

Streams

OAS has 9 streams split into two categories:

Core (3):

• Bushcraft
• Bushwalking
• Camping

Specialist (6):

• Alpine
• Aquatic
• Boating
• Cycling
• Paddling
• Vertical

Each stream has 9 stages. Higher stages in specialist streams may branch into specialisations (e.g. Aquatic branches into Snorkeling, Surfing, etc.).

How requirements work

Each stage contains individual requirements, organised into three phases matching the Plan > Do > Review cycle. Leaders check off specific competencies as Scouts demonstrate them.

Requirements can be completed in two ways:

1. Directly on a Scout’s profile — navigate to a Scout, open the OAS interface, select the stream and stage, and tick individual checkboxes.
2. Via events — target specific OAS requirements on an event (wizard Step 3), then Complete & Award to write them to all present Scouts.

Cross-stream mapping

Some requirements are shared globally across streams — for example, a First Aid qualification might appear in 6 different streams. When you mark a globally-keyed requirement as complete, Tussock automatically cascades the completion to every other stream that shares it.

Globally-keyed requirements show an amber chip like “First Aid (6 streams)” in the OAS picker so you know the cascade will fire.

Stage progression

When all requirements in a stage are complete, the badge status moves to Earned and the leader can award it. Tussock deliberately bypasses the official “Two-Down Assessment” — stage progressions are awarded instantly by a single leader.

Note

OAS progress is permanent and portable. It persists across a Scout’s entire lifecycle, following them when they move between sections or groups.

Viewing OAS progress

The OAS page offers multiple lenses:

• By Scout — drill into an individual Scout’s stream rail, stage dots, and per-requirement checklist.
• By Stream — matrix view with Scouts as rows and stages 1–9 as columns. Tap a cell to see that stage’s requirements.
• By Stage — group view showing which Scouts are closest to completing each stage, with stream and specialisation filters.

Stage dot indicators show at a glance:

• Idle — no progress started
• Partial — some requirements done
• Ready — all requirements done, ready to award
• Done — stage awarded

OAS and events

When planning an event, Step 3 of the wizard lets you browse and select specific OAS requirements. At completion time, those requirements are written to all present Scouts’ profiles. The completion heatmap in the picker shows how many Scouts have already completed each requirement — so you can target the gaps.
